Celebrating the quarter centennial of IPSJ, IPSJ honored seven pioneers, who established basis of information processing, with special contribution awards in 1984. With this award as a trigger, in 1985 IPSJ founded the IPSJ Contribution Award, which is awarded annually to those who achieved special contribution and distinguished service to information processing. When IPSJ Board of Directors decides that a deceased member is deserved for the IPSJ Contribution Award, IPSJ Posthumous Contribution Award is given.

From 1994, funded by donation from late Prof. Hideo Yamashita (the first president of IPSJ), the award was renamed to IPSJ Yamashita SIG Research Award.

This award is given annually at Forum on Information Technology (FIT), which is organized by IPSJ and Information and Systems Society of the Institute of Electronics Information and Communication Engineers (IEICE) since 2002. This award is provided by Funai Foundation for Information Technology, which appreciates objective of FIT. Nomination of award recipients is decided by Steering Committee of the FIT.

Funded by donation from family of late Prof. Zenichi Kiyasu, who is an IPSJ honorary member, “IPSJ Industrial Achievement Award” which was founded in 2006, was renewed as “IPSJ Kiyasu Special Industrial Achievement Award”. This Award is given to an initiative which accomplished distinguished achievement and clear contribution to industries by means of creation of new inventions, development or improvement of new devices and processes, or promotion of commercialization project. In principle, at most three initiatives are selected annually and at most five contributors for each initiative are given this award.
