Nowadays, IoT application systems take important roles in various fields for efficient monitoring, operations, and managements. Then, a lot of researches and educations have been conducted in universities around the world.
However, practical targets of IoT application systems are often missing in universities, such as machines, plants, devices, and building, where they rely on software simulators or toy models. As a result, their research or educational activities can
be far from reality and practicality, which will limit the progress and reduce the effectiveness.
In this study, we present a design and implementation of a water heating model plant for the IoT application system study that can be easily installed even in small university laboratories. This model plant adopts Raspberry Pi 5 for PID control and
MQTT or HTTP communications with the IoT server, DS18B20 temperature sensors, 12VDC water heating element, one- litter acrylic water tank, adjustable clamping systems for positioning sensors and heating elements, water stirrers for
Currently, we are testing this model plant under external disturbances, such as additions of cold/hot water and vibrations of the plant. Besides, we are planning to install AI models to improve the control accuracy.
