AiDAR for VI: A LiDAR and AI Based Smartphone Application for Explaining Surroundings to the Visually Impaired

Visual impairment poses significant challenges to daily life, particularly in terms of perceiving the surrounding environment. To address this issue, this research proposes an application that helps visually impaired individuals to perceive the indoor environments by utilizing the LiDAR scanner and camera of a smartphone. This application provides two functions: explaining the details of the scenery in front of the user using GPT-4 Vision, and alerting the user based on the measured distance of objects in front of the user to prevent collision with objects. In this research, we prototyped the proposed application and demonstrated the feasibility of the concept.
