Colorectal cancer is one of the common forms of cancer in Japan. It can be treated with screening colonoscopy in early diagnosis. However, because of increasing demands on colonoscopic examinations, there is a huge workload on physicians and hence the risk of oversights. Therefore computer aided detection for this examination becomes more important.
In this paper, we describe a preliminary study toward automated polyp detection for screening colonoscopy images. In the proposed method, to reduce the effects of illumination we excepted the bright pixels and to enhance the characteristics of polyps we proposed a new edge detection method. The effectiveness of the proposed method was demonstrated by experimental results.
