Joining-in-type Humanoid Robot Assisted Language Learning Systems

The authors propose a noble model of dialogue-based CALL systems based on findings on behaviors of interlocutors of lower second language (L2) proficiency in three-party conversations in their L2. This methodology incorporates conversations between two sets of humanoid robots and conversations between a learner and the robots. Experimental results show that the proposed methodology provides the following promising features for acquisition of L2: (1) the learners pay attention to utterance by the robots, (2) they have tendency to mimic the utterance of the robots, and (3) they show a positive attitude to the proposed CALL system.
