THEME OF THE WORKSHOP

One of the important goals of communication systems is to provide us with a basic infrastructure to support our daily lives through a variety of network media, wired and wireless, and also computing devices. The recent movement of so-called ubiquitous computing/network or pervasive computing as well as information appliances is initiating a ‘Cambrian Explosion’ of network devices embedded in our environments. Through networks, we will be able to control anything in the world in addition to getting/providing information from/to the networks, assuming many embedded devices or sensors scattered around ourselves.

It is widely known that establishing an energy-saving society will be the most important task for our century of technologies and requires a radical design challenge of technologies. The energy consumption of networks is rather small compared to other industries, but is reported to be increasing fast enough during the last decade to be notified. The speed of increase will be even faster considering the explosion of network devices and the penetration of high speed networks. Considering a disaster recovery from earthquake, energy-saving networks will provide us sustainable services even in this kind of circumstances. In this sense, less energy consumption means national safety.

In recent years, a variety of technologies from transport services to applications have been developed. Among them, photonic devices can be considered to be ones reducing the power consumption of routers or switches in backbone networks. There have been developed a number of power-consumption-aware protocols for sensor networks. In this area, even energy harvesting devices are now developed. In spite of these developments, the overall effect of these technologies has not been intensively discussed yet.

This workshop offers the opportunity to bring together researchers involved in research on energy-saving technologies related to networks. It aims at exploring the most recent research results and ongoing work in areas such as photonic networks, wireless networks including sensor networks, autonomic computing, and home appliances. The workshop will foster exchange of experiences and collaboration among researchers.

In particular, the following topics are of interest to this workshop:

• Photonic network device technologies for power reduction
• Commercial wireless networks and power reduction methods
• Sensor networks and energy controls
• Energy-saving technologies in information appliances
• Energy harvesting for sensor networks

PAPERS AND AUTHOR'S KIT

Workshop papers should be within 4 pages, no extra page is allowed. The Proceedings of the Symposium and the Workshops will be published, in separated volumes, by the IEEE Computer Society Press. Information for Authors

PAPER SUBMISSION

Papers should be sent to the Organizer no later than March 1, 2008 via e-mail. The e-mail address is asami@akg.t.u-tokyo.ac.jp. After a review process by Organizer and Program Committee of the Workshop, authors of accepted papers will be requested to send its final manuscript to IEEE-CS press no later than May 1, 2008. So, authors are kindly requested to submit papers as early as possible to facilitate a review process.

IMPORTANT DATES

REGISTRATION

It is the IEEE policy that accepted papers can be published only when IEEE recognized that at least one author has registered for presentation.

So, authors will be requested to register along with the final manuscript. SAINT Conference Registration fees include a copy of the Conference proceedings, a copy of the Workshop proceedings, and admission to the Conference/Workshop sessions.

NOTE

The date and length (a full or half day) of the Workshop will be decided by SAINT2008 Organizing Committee taking account of the number submitted of papers, and be notified on the SAINT2008 web. Please also note that, according to the SAINT2008 Organizing Committee, the Workshop is subject to cancellation when the number submitted of papers will not be enough.
